ENCOMPASSING THE GLOBE – PORTUGAL AND THE WORLDS OF THE 16TH AND 17TH CENTURIES

2007 Coleções

Throughout the 16th century, Portuguese navigators explored international waters, creating a new network of global trade that linked Europe and other territories, transforming commercial relations and developing unprecedented cultural exchange. The exhibition Encompassing the Globe explores the artistic creation that flourished when the Portuguese navigators spread new techniques and images throughout the world. Composed of around 250 pieces produced by cultures in contact with Portugal’s first commercial routes, the exhibition was presented in Washington, at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and at the National Museum of African Art.
